The National Head Start program was begun in 1965 during the Lyndon Johnson administration.  Head Start is federally funded and administered by the Department of Health and Human Services.  There is an average of 7,500 preschoolers enrolled in 26 Head Start centers in Connecticut.

Head Start is a comprehensive child development program that encompasses Early Child Development and Health Services, Family and Community Partnerships, and Program Design and Management.  These areas include family support, education, health, mental health, disabilities, nutrition, social services and family involvement.

At Enfield Head Start, all teachers are CT certified.  Assistant teachers have appropriate certification.  We also have a registered nurse.  Family service workers hold the appropriate credentials.  Food service workers hold food handling certificates.  The director and coordinators hold appropriate masters degrees.

Enfield Head Start opened in 1978 and now has 104 children in 6 classrooms.  Head Start is a daily program which has the same holiday schedule as the public schools.
